Free State Arts and Culture hosts successful homebrew programme

The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (DSACR) in partnership with the national Department of Arts and Culture presented the 2018 Homebrew programme from 7-12 October 2018 in Mangaung.

This week-long programme included a Reggae Festival, Word Fest, Free State Legends Music Festival, Urban Youth Festival, Miss Glamorous Beauty Pageant, a Theatre and Dance Festival as well as the Visual Arts Crafts Market. The Homebrew Programme is a developmental programme of the department which seeks to provide exposure to local artists who were not able to be part of the flagship programmes such as MACUFE.

A key highlight of the 2018 Homebrew Programme was the successful Word Fest which was hosted by DSACR’s Language Services Unit to celebrate the literary practitioners in and around the Free State Province. More than 200 enthusiasts gathered at the Musicon Hall in Westdene (Mangaung) from 11-12 October 2018 for the two-day event which covered all genres and aspects of literary art. Writers’ organisations from as far as Kroonstad (Ngolang Bangodi) as well as learners from various schools in the province also attended the event.

Officials and literary artists from the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, led by Senior Manager Mr. Grootboom, also made way to the city of Mangaung. The Northern Cape was represented by Mr. Mbandezi, of their Language Services.

The event was also graced by the presence of DASCR’s Chief Director for Cultural Affairs, Mr. Vincent Khetha, who spoke highly of the event. Commending the 11 year old relationship between the Eastern Cape and the Free State he said: “It has become a pilgrimage that annually our officials would attend and support Eastern Cape LitFest which takes place during the Standard Bank National Arts Festival.

We believe the time has arrived to formalise and solidify our working relations in a form of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).” He added, “Our plan is to ensure that this anticipated MoU won’t only be limited to issues of languages, but it will be extended to Arts and Culture, Museums and Libraries.”
