Deputy Minister Barbara Thomson launches non-motorised transportation project in Mpumalanga, 5 Jul

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs Barbara Thomson will on the 5 July 2016 launch a non-motorised transportation project at the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality in Mpumalanga.

The department, through its Environmental Protection and Infrastructure Programme, has funded four projects in Steve Tshwete Local Municipality.

In implementing the projects, the programme uses labour intensive methods as per the requirements of Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

This project is also being used as the first pilot project for EPIP on Non-Motorised Transport (NMT). This pilot project is targeting People and Parks (P&P) and Wildlife Economy (WE), as these focus areas implement projects in conservation areas, which are located far away from communities where the participants are residing.

The Deputy Minister, will also hand over 24 bicycles to some of the participants who voluntarily agreed to ride to and from the project site.
