Energy on fuel price adjustment for June 2016

The Department of Energy informs the public of the fuel price adjustments for June 2016. South Africa’s fuel prices are adjusted on a monthly basis, informed by international and local factors.

International factors include the fact that South Africa imports both crude oil and finished products at a price set at the international level, including shipping costs.

The main reasons for the fuel price adjustments in June 2016 are (a) the average increase in the prices of petroleum products in the international markets (about 30.00c/l for petrol and 56.00 c/l for diesel respectively), and (b) the weakening of the Rand against the US Dollar during the period under review which contributed to the price adjustments by over 20.00c/l.

The price differential between petrol and diesel can be attributed to the supply – demand patterns in the international markets. Higher diesel prices in this month's short term economic outlook reflect higher forecast for crude oil prices and the fact that refineries are focused on producing more petrol for the summer season in Europe. Analysts expect the diesel market to be tight in the next few months.

The Department urges motorists and the general public to use these petroleum products efficiently during these tough economic times.

Based on current local and international factors, the fuel prices for June 2016 will be adjusted as follows:

  1. Diesel (both grades) will increase by 76.00 cents/ litre
  2. Petrol 95 & 93 Octane (both ULP & LRP) will increase by 52.00 cents/litre.
  3. Illuminating paraffin (SMNRP) will increase by 83.00 cents per litre
  4. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) will increase by 98.00 cents per kilogram

In other fuel pricing zones, the prices will be different due to the adjustment to the transportation costs. The pricing schedule for the different zones will be published on Tuesday, 31 May 2016.
