The ordinary Cabinet meeting of 13 December 2019 approved the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s (DMRE) draft Biofuels Regulatory Framework subject to the incorporation of amendments required. In addition, the Mandatory Blending Regulations published on the 23 August 2012 will also be amended to be in line with the Biofuels Regulatory Framework as approved by Cabinet.
Following these amendments, the Biofuels Regulatory Framework together with the implementation plan will be published by the end of January 2020.
Towards the execution of the Cabinet decision, the DMRE will convene a meeting of the inter-departmental Biofuels Task Team (BTT) during the first week of January 2020 to agree on the implementation plan of the Biofuels Regulatory Framework. The BTT comprises of officials from the DMRE, National Treasury, Department of Science and Innovation, Department of Agriculture, Land Reform & Rural Development, Department of Trade & Industry, Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries as well as the Department of Transport.
