KwaZulu-Natal Treasury donates books to poor school in Umbumbulu

KZN Treasury HOD, Simiso Magagula, donates books and ensures clean drinking water to a poor school in Umbumbulu

The Head of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Provincial Treasury, Simiso Magagula, as well as Santam bring long-awaited change to the lives of the 242 learners of a rural impoverished SAWPITS Secondary School in Mbumbulu area today.

Magagula donated the much-needed 6 boxes of school library books while Santam donated a cheque of R30 000 meant for the purchase and erection of Jojo Tanks structure to ensure availability of clean drinking water to the leaners after years of strife and suffering.

Pamela Ramagaga, Manager at Santam, said the donation they are making is through their social corporate investments.

“If the HOD for Treasury can stay next to us more often, Santam can contribute a lot more to other schools and communities as well. We want to help build our country and it is through these partnerships that we have made with KZN Treasury that we can extend more support to the needy communities,” she said.

Magagula who is also the HOD Champion for Operation Sukuma Sakhe in eThekwini, said his passion is to support needy schools in this area.

“Due to the severe drought, I sought to mobilise support to various schools as well as school uniforms to needy learners. This is a campaign we have been involved in as Provincial Treasury. SAWPITS is one of the schools we identified in March this year.

They have had no drinking water for many years and we are happy that we able to get them support through a donation by Santam. This donation will be used for the purpose of purchasing and erecting a clean water system for the learners,” he said.

Owami Sabela, 10, who is in Grade 5, said I would like to thank the donation by Treasury and Santam.

“From now on, we will not have water problems as before. We still need support in other things and I hope that this will not be the last time we get support from government and the private sector, “ she said.

The school Principal, Thandekile Phungula, said SAWPITS has learners who come from impoverished backgrounds and some are living with disabilities. The school needs various other things such as a sports field and maintenance. I need these children to get more exposure in information technology.
