Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation commemorates 2019 Women’s Day in Pretoria, 9 Aug

August is Women’s month and Gauteng joins the rest South Africa in celebrating and honouring our heroines in Growing Gauteng Together.

This years’ provincial Women’s Day proceedings will take place on Friday, 09 August 2019 at the Union Buildings in Tshwane under the theme, “25 Years of Democracy: Growing South Africa Together for Women’s Emancipation”.

The event will commence with a 2.3km walk from the Women’s Living Monument at Lillian Ngoyi Square, led by Premier David Makhura and the women to the Union Buildings.

2019 marks the 63rd anniversary of the 1956 women’s march, an act of bravery demonstrated by the women of South Africa on Gauteng soil. Over 20 000 women took it upon themselves to voice their message at the then administration of the day, the immoral apartheid government.

Says Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Mbali Hlophe: “Sixty-three (63) years on and at the start of the 6th administration, we are reliving the march in honour of women from our past but also to inspire those of today and the future. The light they shone should never die. Every women needs to learn from their dedication to continue the fight for justice for all.

“As women we are an integral part of transforming and growing our country towards a viable socio-economic destination.  There’s a lot to still fight for and against by the rest of the society including issues about women development, women health rights, gender transformation, women abuse etc.

“Since 1994 the Gauteng Provincial Government has done a lot of work in empowering and emancipating including women constituting most beneficiaries from its programmes such as Tshepo 1 Million and Welfare to Work amongst others” added MEC Hlophe.
