KwaZulu-Natal residents urged to use water sparingly as provincial dam storage capacity remains unchanged
The Department of Water and Sanitation in KwaZulu-Natal has cautioned residents to use water sparingly as the overall water storage capacity in the province remains unchanged at last week’s 89.3%.
“We may be sitting at almost 90% of good dam levels across the province, but this does not mean that we are out of the woods yet. There are still some communities which are experiencing water challenges, and we are working like a hand in glove with various municipalities and our entity, Umgeni-uThukela Water, to roll out bulk water projects to ensure reliable access and supply of water,” said Wisane Mavasa, the Departmental spokesperson.
While work continues to successfully implement measures to bring about relief, Mavasa said it was important for residents, especially businesses, to use water sparingly.
The Umgeni Water Supply System, which feeds five dams across the province, is at 100.3% full capacity.
Midmar, Nagle and Albert-Falls dams are at 100% full capacity, while Hazelmere Dam is at 81.9% from 82.8% and Driel Barrage Dam is unchanged at 96.7%.
Inanda Dam located on the Mgeni River is at 101.6% from last week’s 102.2%. Craigie Burn Dam has slightly decreased from 100.3% to 99.7% and Zaaihoek Dam on the Slang River which primary provides water for industrial and municipal uses has remained at 90.6% recorded in the previous week.
Wagendrift dam is at 100.6% from 101.1%, Ntshingwayo Dam at 77.3% from 77.9%, Pongolapoort Dam is at 81.6% from last week’s 81.4%, meanwhile Spioenkop Dam on the Tugela River is at 100.1% from 100.2%.
