MEC Anroux Marais promotes social inclusivity through cultural affairs and sport, 27 Mar

Tomorrow, 27 March 2021, Minister Anroux Marais will send off the very first 27 For Freedom Virtual Race as we celebrate 27 years of democracy in South Africa.

Amidst many hardships and struggles over the past year, the organizers of this special event in honour of former President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela still managed to put together a unique race for both runners and cyclists. Although this is the start of the first virtual edition of the race, it represents the 12th 27 For Freedom Race in honour of Madiba. Participants have time to conclude their individual item by Wednesday, 31 March 2021. The aim is to involve as many as possible people in this prestigious activity. More information on the 27 For Freedom Virtual Race can be found on https://www.topevents.co.za/event/27-for-freedom-virtual-race-2021/

Thereafter, Minister Marais will travel to Tulbagh to officially open the Conrad Sidego Resource Centre at the Volksmuseum. The new Conrad Sidego Resource Centre was brought into fruition following the sales of the “Tulbagh Onthou” book, sponsored by Santam, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Boland Earthquake in 1969. One of the conditions set by the main sponsors, Santam, was for the proceeds of the published book to be used to initiate a project to the benefit of the under-resourced and most vulnerable in the community of Tulbagh.

As a local, born in Tulbagh, the late Conrad Sidego was a vocal advocate for closing the digital gap between rural communities and that on the urban cities. The responsible committee therefore took the decision to name the new Resource Centre after the late Conrad Sidego as it will afford local children and adults alike free access to the internet on updated computers with added resources to prepare them to take up opportunities not only in Tulbagh but anywhere in the world.

On Sunday, Minister Marais will attend the closing ceremony of the inaugural Western Cape Open Ladies Fly Fishing Championships. As women are heavily underrepresented in Fly-fishing within South Africa, the Western Province Fly Fishing Association hopes to use this event to increase participation and allow those already participating regularly to shine and take pride as leaders amongst their peers.
