The joint graduation ceremony of NDoH/PHEF post-graduate medical doctors in honour of the late Prof Bongani Mayosi

In 30th April 2019, the Ministers of Health and Higher Education will preside over the graduation ceremony of post-graduate medical doctors from various healthcare disciplines. These are beneficiaries of a social compact entered into between the National Department of Health and 22 Healthcare Companies on 8th of November 2012, to improve healthcare in South Africa.

The objective of the social compact is to contribute towards enhanced human capital and resourcing in the SA healthcare system. A particular focus of the compact, was enhancing human capital in underdeveloped and resource constrained communities in our country and the boosting of research and innovation capacity and capability.

To this end 3 programmes were mutually agreed between the National Department of Health and the 22 private companies, who set up a vehicle called the PHEF (Public Health Enhancement Fund), which would fund the programmes. These programme include the National Health Scholars Programme (NHSP), and is a partnership between the PHEF, the NDoH and the South African Research Medical Council (SAMRC).

The NHSP is a national asset and flagship programme for advancing the next generation of African health and clinical scientists. The Chair of the programme was the late Professor Bongani Mayosi, who championed the scholarship programme together with Minister Motsoaledi.

At this event, the NHSP programme will be renamed Bongani Mayosi National Health Scholarship Programme, in honour of Professor Mayosi’s immense contributions and lasting legacy to research and improved human health universally. There will also be unveiling of the New NHSP Corporate Identity.

Since the initial 22 companies, 2 other companies joined the PHEF and 2 other companies merged. Contributions to the fund commenced in 2013 and up to 2018 approximately R200 million has been contributed to the fund, in order to fund the 3 programmes.
