The Zululand District Municipality had set a sterling example by taking swift action against cheque fraud by municipal officials. This was the word from Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube today as she congratulated the municipality following the arrest of several municipal officials who allegedly stole and cashed out municipal cheques worth nearly R1 million.
At least six officials have been arrested in relation to the two incidents which occurred in the district.
Addressing KwaZulu-Natal's 61 mayors and municipal managers at a meeting in Durban yesterday, Dube singled out Zululand Mayor Zanele Magwaza-Msibi, describing her as "a shining example to all mayors for demonstrating unwavering commitment to support our efforts as the provincial government to put an end to corruption and fraud at local government level".
"I want to thank you Mama uMayor (Magwaza-Msibi) for following up on this issue when it emerged, even going directly to the police to see to it that arrests are made over this matter," she said.
"We expect municipal leadership to demonstrate the same kind of commitment and energy to fighting corruption and fraud in our municipalities because if we fail to stamp out this scourge, service delivery and development at municipal level will be severely compromised," said Dube.
