Your health is in your hands - numbers of H1N1 cases increase

As the numbers of people infected with the H1N1 influenza virus are increasing by day the department of health says; "Your health is in your hands!"

As of 11 August 2009, KwaZulu-Natal has 129 cases of H1N1 influenza infected individuals and schools (especially boarding schools) in the Umgungundlovu have reported pupils presenting with symptoms and others having been confirmed. The department will intensify its public education campaign with greater focus in eThekwini and Umgungundlovu. In the coming weeks; health worker teams will be visiting schools, churches, shopping malls, taxi ranks and other public areas to educate and inform the public about the disease and ways to prevent it.

The main route of transmission of the H1N1 influenza virus is similar to seasonal influenza, via droplets that are expelled by speaking, sneezing or coughing. The symptoms of H1N1 flu virus in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. A significant number of people who have been infected with H1N1 flu virus also have reported diarrhoea and vomiting.

Individuals can prevent getting infected by avoiding close contact with people who show influenza-like symptoms (trying to maintain a distance of about one meter if possible) and taking the following measures:

* avoid touching your mouth and nose
* clean hands thoroughly with soap and water
* avoid close contact with people who might be ill
* reduce the time spent in crowded settings if possible
* improve airflow in your living space by opening windows
* practise good health habits including adequate sleep, eating nutritious food, and keeping physically active.
