Top athletes lined up for Mandela Day Marathon

By popular demand, the deadline for athletes to enter the 2014 edition of the Mandela deadline has been extended to Monday, 11 August 2014.  This is due to a lot of interest shown by athletes including many within the Africa and overseas.

Top athletes from around the world have already registered for this month’s Mandela Day Marathon which is set to take place on Sunday 31 August. This Marathon, whose growth has been exponential over the past three years, is set to break another record in terms of participation.

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Nomusa Dube-Ncube, has called on all athletes intending to participate to make sure they register within the extended deadline. “We have received entries from some of the world’s finest long-distance athletes. Even our own Comrades Marathon champion, Bongani Mthembu, will be participating in this marathon. This is why we are confident that this marathon will be a huge success,” said Dube-Ncube.

“This marathon will also be broadcast live on SABC which is an indication of its importance. We also expect this marathon to yield great benefits for the local economy of uMgungundlovu, as over 10 000 athletes and their families will descend on the capital city,” said Dube-Ncube.

Athletes of the calibre of Willie Mtolo, who is a former winner of the renowned New York Marathon, will make this marathon a truly intriguing one as will scores of other celebrities.
