Statement from the MEC for Education, Mr Senzo Mchunu - State of Readiness - National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP)

As a Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal, we are ready to provide National School Nutrition Programme as from 16 January 2013. Much as the National School Nutrition Programme is primarily aimed at alleviating the plight of those learners who come from indigent families, the spin-off of this programme is that it contributes profoundly to economic growth in local communities.

We have increased the number of cooperatives who are taking part in this programme, from 109 in 2011 to 258 in 2013 – this is more than 100% increase. Our message to all those who are going to provide this service to our learners is that they need to take this task very seriously and adhere to all the terms, conditions and stipulations.

As a department we have also ensured that we do away with a practice where there were indications of monopoly by some service providers. To this end, one of our strict conditions is that no service provider is allowed to feed more than 3 000 learners. This is to ensure that jobs are spread evenly to all qualifying service providers.

All appointed service providers should ensure that food is at the schools by 15 January and is kept safe by school principals.

We are confident as a department that this programme is going to continue to contribute to school attendance and help our learners get quality education which is our main objective.
