The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu is worried about the ongoing deaths of taxi operators at uMlazi within the MNR Taxi Association.
“As the new MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison I will meet with the conflict ridden taxi association,” Mchunu says.
To that end, the MEC resolves to call the regional Chairperson of uMlazi, Mr Mthiyane to a meeting so as to get the full picture of what is happening in the MNR Taxi Association. The MEC will further meet the taxi operators in the area in an attempt to come to the root causes of the problem.
In view of the fact that taxi operators are continuing to die in the area, the
MEC will seek an explanation from the police on the causes of death including what the police have done to address the matter.
“It is in our interest as government to win the war on taxi violence if we are serious about the development of this industry and the safety of our commuters including the road users at large,” Mchunu said.
