Statement from KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Senzo Mchunu - workbooks at the warehouse of UTI Distributors

I want to express my disappointment and dismay at the discovery of workbooks at the warehouse of UTI Distributors at Empangeni. UTI Distributors is a company that is contracted by the Department of Basic Education to distribute workbooks to schools in all the provinces, including KwaZulu-Natal.

As a department we started to suspect that something was wrong when instead of distributing workbooks directly to schools, UTI decided to distribute workbooks at the offices of Uthungulu District. That means we had to incur unnecessary expenses where principals had to drive to the District Offices to collect workbooks. This inefficiency happened more than once hence we began to suspect that something was really wrong.

We began to investigate and followed leads which led us to this shocking discovery. This morning I went and saw for myself workbooks shredded, burnt and other workbooks which were supposed to be delivered by March still at the warehouse. We can’t help but suspect that there is a case of huge corruption on the part of the company in question. We also suspect that distribution of workbooks to schools have been affected as a result of this misdemeanor.

I have reported this matter to Minister Angie Motshekga and to the South African Police Services, and we hope the perpetrators will face the full might of the law.
