Statement from KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education, Senzo Mchunu

As a Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal, we would like to welcome back all our learners and educators after a winter recess and we hope that this break provided much needed rest and rejuvenation. We would also like to thank both educators and learners for their commitment and hard work during our winter class programme. I would like to assure you that the work that you have put in during this winter school programme is going assist you profoundly during the final examination – you are never going to regret it.

We are left with only 99 days before the final examination for Grade 12 especially and this can only mean one thing, there is no time to play. We urge all the stakeholder, parents, school governing bodies (SGBs), educators, teacher unions and everyone else to put the shoulder to the wheel and work together to ensure success for the class of 2012.

From the 19th to the 20th of July 2012, I together with the Members of Provincial Legislature (MPLs) will embark on a two days visit to schools as part of monitoring functionality during this term. What makes these visits different is that we will only visit primary schools. What is even more interesting is that each and every MPL will have to carry with him/her books to read to learners and after that donate those books to all schools that they will visit.

We are doing this because recent The Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality (SACMEQ) studies have shown that our learners are not doing well when it comes to reading and writing and therefore are doing whatever it takes to ensure that we reverse this trend. This is also in keeping with our resolve to support learners at foundation phase. Much as we want our learners to excel and pass National Senior Cerificate, we believe culture of hard work and excellence must start at a foundation phase.

As a Department of Education in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal, we leave and breathe education and we will stop at nothing to ensure that our learners get the best education they can get.
