Statement from KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC, Senzo Mchunu on National School Nutrition programme

It has come to our attention that there are some principals in the department who deliberately frustrate the work of service providers who have been appointed to provide National School Nutrition programme in our schools.

These principals are said to be refusing to sign invoices given to them by service providers and this frustrates and delays the process that aims to ensure that these service providers get paid on time.

As a department, we reviewed the National School Nutrition Policy with a view to address poverty which is one of the challenges faced by our society. What we wanted to ensure was that we slice the cake evenly, so that we benefit as many of our people as possible. To this end, the response that we have received so far from across the length and breadth of our province is very positive and very heartening.

We are therefore going to investigate these allegations that have been reported to us and we will take firm action if these allegations are found to be true. This National School Nutrition programme aims to alleviate the plight of especially those children who come from indigent families and these disturbing allegations militate against this progressive programme of our government.

We are grateful however, that the majority of our schools are working very well with the service providers and the National School Nutrition programme is going on very well in the province.
