KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu is urging road users to be more cautious on the roads as human error was once again the main cause of loss of life.
On the N2 Bridge Empangeni area a cargo truck overturned and caught alight; one person was injured and taken to Ngwelezana hospital. The cause of the accident is still unknown. On N3 north bound Orhtmann road a vehicle lost control and hit a bridge; two people were killed and one survived with critical injuries.
On N3 Estcourt north bound one heavy motor vehicle lost control and overturned; two people were killed, and three people were critically injured and were taken to Estcourt hospital. In a separate accident on the south bound two heavy motor vehicles were involved in a rear-ended collision, one person was injured.
At Meme in Nongoma a female pedestrian was knocked by a patrol vehicle and died instantly.
On N2 south bound between Mthwalume and Hirbedene a light motor vehicle lost control and went across colliding head onto a heavy motor vehicle travelling north, one person was killed and another survived with serious injuries.
On N2 south bound near Seacow Lake three vehicles were involved in an accident, a minibus, one light motor vehicle and a heavy motor vehicle; preliminary reports reveal that the minibus rear-ended into a heavy motor vehicle and a light motor vehicle rear-ended into the minibus. Eleven people were injured.
"It pains me a great deal when our people lose their lives as a result of these accidents. I am convinced that these accidents are avoidable. Motorists shall at all times observe the rules of the road. No dangerous overtaking and no speeding. I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. Our traffic officers will be on the look out in all corners of the province, in full force," said Mchunu.
