KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu has learnt with shock about the death of six victims killed in an accident involving 3 vehicles and a motorbike on the N3 near Hammarsdale off ramp yesterday night on 1 April 2013.
It is alleged that a Mazda lost control and a BMW collided into the rear end of the Mazda, which caused a chain reaction, causing the Mercedes Benz as well as a motorcycle to rear end each other. Six people died on the scene and eight sustained injuries and were sent to Hillcrest hospital. A team of specialised experts are currently investigating the circumstances that might have possible led to this tragic accident.
MEC Mchunu has expressed concern that more than 30 people were killed on provincial roads over the Easter Holidays. He further condemned reckless drivers who are deliberately violating traffic rules. “I would like to send my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. I am deeply shocked after learning about this horrific accident.
It is unacceptable that six people were killed in one accident. This accident happened as we are mourning the death of more than 30 people who were unnecessarily killed over the weekend. We are of the firm view that these accidents are caused by people who are violating the law. Drastic measures need to be taken to address lawlessness.
The report of the Easter weekend indicates that most drivers on the road still disregard the rules of the road as more than 50 people were arrested for drinking and driving, more than 135 vehicles were suspended whilst 394 people were arrested for driving without driver’s licence,” said Mchunu.
Mchunu further takes this opportunity to thank the police for the hard work over the Easter weekend period. Their commitment to saving lives of road users is truly commendable.
