KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu strongly condemns the high number of deaths on KwaZulu-Natal roads during the long weekend, seven people lost their lives in road accidents and 17 were critically injured and 34 sustained minor injuries.
On Friday, 7 August 2009 on the Creighton road near Ixopo, a heavy motor vehicle and a Toyota venture were involved in a collision. As a result, two people lost their lives, three were deemed critically injured and six sustained minor injuries.
On Saturday on the N3 south bound near Midmar three cars were involved in a collision, two people including a three year old child lost their lives. On the N3 near Estcourt a driver was caught driving at 244 kilometres per hour, he was granted bail of R1 500. During a road block conducted by female RTI officers 56 motorists were charged.
Yesterday, 9 August 2009 a minibus driver who was driving a fully laden taxi was arrested after being caught driving ten times over the legal drinking limit near Camperdown. He will appear in court on Tuesday. Today at Park Rynie a motorist was caught driving at 227km/h.
“We as the Department of Transport would like to urge all roads users to obey the rules of the road, keep to the legal speed limit and to inspect their vehicles before embarking on any road trips,” said Mchunu.
