The MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Senzo Mchunu, would like to congratulate Smanga Khumalo, the first black jockey to win the Durban July Horse Racing Premier event. Khumalo, who hails from KwaMashu township and was a learner at Mzuvele High School, surprised many when he led to victory his horse, Heavy Metal ahead of the favoured Run For It, last Saturday.
"We are very proud of this young man who is a product of one of our township schools. This is indicative of the strides that we can make if we all pull together to assist our children to reach their full potential and help them realise their dreams. It shows that no matter the background and circumstances, nothing is impossible. We would like to thank Smanga’s parents for supporting him and his trainer for seeing the potential in him. Today Smanga is a role model to many and we wish him all the best in his future adventures," said MEC Mchunu.
