Schools rationalisation project

The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal has embarked on a project to rationalise small, non-viable (satellite) schools and merge them into larger schools. With this rationalisation project, the department also intends doing away with what used to be called Combined Schools.

Since the advent of a democratic new order, there has been a continuous quest to provide for a "uniform system for the organisation, governance and funding of schools" South African Schools Act, 1996. The intention of the department with this rationalisation of schools is to have only two types of schools i.e. Primary Schools (from Grade R to Grade 7) and Secondary Schools (from Grade 8 to Grade 12.)

This exercise has numerous sound educational benefits including the opportunity to offer a diversified curriculum in an environment that is conducive to teaching and learning. The second objective is to have well organised schools in respect of primary and high school categories and improve on the quality of education. It has become increasingly necessary to set uniform norms and standards for the organisation of schools in accordance with the provisions of the legislative imperatives.
