School attendance is compulsory during examination period

There is a growing tendency by learners who mislead their parents and bunk school claiming that they are not supposed to attend school because of the National Senior Certificate (NCS) Examinations that are underway.

We would like to state categorically as a department that all learners who are not writing NCS examinations are supposed to attend classes every school day as it is usually the norm. The 2011 school calendar ends on 9 December 2011.

As we have said at the beginning of the year that every school day is important, we do not want learners to miss a single day of learning even though this year is drawing to an end.

Much as the focus of the public is mainly on Grade 12 who are currently writing their exams, as a department we place as much significance to other grades, which is why we want to ensure that all grades starting from foundation phase receive accessible and quality education.

We would therefore want to warn all learners who might be tempted to bunk classes under false pretence that they will be dealt with in keeping with the code of conduct of their respective schools and ask all parents to ensure that their children attend school.

We also call upon schools to continue holding revision classes for subjects that have not been written in the NCS examinations in order to give support to Grade 12 learners.
