'Real Disabled Men Can Save Pledge' initiative was officially launched today

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Finance, Ms Ina Cronjé, delivered a message of support at the official launch of ‘Real Men Can Save Pledge’ at Albert Park in Durban today.

KwaZulu-Natal Disabled Men put their foot-down at the launch of a historic initiative known as ‘Real Men Can Save Pledge’. This initiative by the KZN Disabled Real Men is aimed at engaging all the disabled men and boys in all spheres of life to act as exemplary ambassadors which shall put an end to the scourges of domestic violence emanating from rape, drug abuse and disabled sugar-daddies, HIV and AIDS Epidemic, inequality harm, disabled men to disabled men and non disabled men violence and vice versa, support disabled men and boys at risk and those needing special care in institutions and communities through programmatic Disabled Real Men Community Based Rehabilitation. 

But what was of interest to MEC Cronjé was that, disabled people through this initiative also committed in embarking on a turnaround strategy to up-skill themselves, promoting financial literacy, effecting saving culture and creating job opportunities. MEC Cronjé pledged to support this initiative in this regard by offering training and financial literacy support through the KwaZulu-Natal Financial Literacy Association.

MEC Cronjé encouraged attendees to believe in themselves and to always aim high. “It is high time that disabled people look beyond disability, they have to enhance their self-esteem through best practices interventions advancing ubuntu through: Skills Development, Healthy Life Style, Saving Culture, Jobs and Integrated Support. Real disabled men can save their hard earned money; they can take a lead into issues of finance. With initiative like this one, this team can take a lead and end up teaching those who are regarded as ‘abled’, to save and to manage their finances properly,” she said.

Speaking at the launch the Chairperson of the KZN DPSA, Mr Sipho Gamede, said that “this initiative seek to encourage disabled men to develop themselves as caring and supportive partners of the women sector, through effective participation in international, national, provincial and local disabled men's campaign for health, economic development and job creation activities and cultural or customary orientations.”

The launch organiser, Mr S'busiso Xaba, said that “we are keen to partner with many organisations to establish ‘July Disabled Men Fund’ to assist disabled with little that they have to be part of national wealth creation. Many disabled men are unemployed but recipient of government disability grant. This initiative intends to be a transformational constructive engagement of the disability sector to save,” he said.
