MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu has commended the Scottburgh Magistrate court for issuing Major Mfesane Bhekizulu a fine of R25 000 for speeding yesterday (4 June 2012).
It is alleged that at about 12h00, Major Bhekizulu was travelling in a VW Golf, from Durban to Mthatha, when he was stopped on the N2 near Sezela and arrested on the spot for the excessive speeding of 226 km/h on a 120 km/h zone.
He was then taken to the Scottburgh police station and today appeared at the Scottburgh magistrate court where he was fined. Mchunu commended the courts decision for taking this harsh decision to show that transgressions on the road are a serious offence.
"This arrest comes three days after I gave my budget speech where I outlined our intention as a department of working with all structures and the people of KwaZulu-Natal in all their formations to partner with us in fighting transgressions on the road. I welcome the decision taken by the court to fine him R25 000. As part of this year's theme of deepening activism against road transgressions accidents, this is a warning to other motorists that we are out in full force to ensure that we fight road accidents. As an ideal we must work towards producing a new type of driver in KwaZulu-Natal who respects the rule of law. This is clear evidence that indeed KwaZulu-Natal alufakwa lubuya nesaphulamthetho" said Mchunu.
