KZN Premier pleased with roadblocks conducted in Umlazi and other parts of the province to enforce coronavirus lockdown
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala has commended law enforcement agencies for conducting roadblocks throughout the province to enforce the national lockdown to curb the spread of the Coronavirus.
On Saturday Premier Zikalala, Tranport and Community Safery MEC Bheki Ntuli, Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu and senior police officials conducted successful roadblocks in Umlazi township, south of Durban.
A total of 224 roadblocks were conducted in the province, includimg three in the Umlazi cluster where three people were arrested for failing to adhere to the national lockdown regulations and 12 issued with traffic fines for various traffic offenses.
"We believe that the majority of the people here have listened and are adhering to the lockdown but there are those who are seemingly not taking it seriously," said Zikalala.
The Premier said members of the SA Police Service, SA National Defense Force and other law enforcement agencies will be all over the province to enforce the national lockdown.
"We are all over KZN working with law enforcement agencies. We would like to thank them for the work they have done. The volume of cars is now down. We will be all over to ensure that we deal with people who are still driving up and down," said the Premier.
He said the issue of water still remained a problem in many parts of the province and the provincial government was working around the clock to address it.
"We have managed to identify key areas that are affected. We know that Umkhanyakude is one of the mostly affected, Zululand, Umzinyathi and some parts of various districts," he said.
The Premier said he will take up the matter with the Provincial Department of Coopertive Governance and Traditional Affairs.
"But as from yesterday, Cogta was planning to allocate a further 5000 water tankers. There are other water tankers which were distributed before which are not sufficient," said Zikalala.
He sad he together with Ntuli will also be meeting with Santaco to finalise issues around public transport.
"There are discussions that took place yesterday and they (Santaco) are meeting today in the province. We will follow up with them and finalise the issue of public transport. We are not going to yield to prolonging hours of work but we will be engaging with them," said Zikalala.
