KwaZulu-Natal Premier Mr Senzo Mchunu today (Saturday) joined a march to the uMfolozi TVET College in Esikhaleni, outside Richards Bay, where he addressed thousands of women's who gathered to celebrate National Women's day.

Women’s Day celebrations are traditionally held on August 9 every year, but the Province’s commemoration was held today.

In his speech Mchunu said this day was designed to celebrate the gallant contribution of South African women to the struggle for liberation and the attainment of the democracy for our country.

“Today we are celebrating the 59th anniversary of the 1956 Women's March to the Union Buildings, which was an important milestone in the campaign to fight for a free, non-racial and non-sexist society,” said Mchunu, adding that this day is a tribute to thousands of women whose names we may never know, who suffered and fought for the freedom we enjoy today.
