The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Mr. Senzo Mchunu is saddened by the untimely death of the lead singer of the Soul Brothers, Mr. David Masondo.
“The news of the passing of David Masondo, an eminent South African Musician of note have left a bitter taste in my mouth” says the Premier.
David Masondo led the Soul Brothers during the very difficult period in our struggle history. Most of the lyrical content of their hits resonated well with the oppressed masses of this province, and those who needed to generate hope during the hopeless period of the ’80 and the ‘90’s.
The nation has lost the hero, his family has lost the husband and a father and the youth has lost an idol who proved the longest staying power in the music industry since the formation of the Soul Brothers in 1974. As a province, it is always painful to see our own heroes departing the stage.
As a son of the province, hailing from Hammersdale, David has not only inspired the nation, but has created an inspiration for the youth to follow on his footsteps. His music has restored confidence to the youth and encouraged them to embrace their culture, traditions and language.
In our province, his memory will live on.
On behalf of the Provincial Government of KwaZulu-Natal and its people, I would like to convey my condolences to Masondo family, his band Soul Brothers and everyone who was touched by his soulful music.
May His Soul Rest In Peace.
