The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Nomusa Dube-Ncube has expressed her deep sadness at the passing of the legendary and globally acclaimed playwright, composer, director and theatre producer Mbongeni Ngema. Madlokovu, as Mbongeni was affectionately referred to by his clan name, reportedly died in a car accident on Wednesday, 27 December.
“We have learned with shock of the untimely passing of internationally acclaimed veteran of theatre Mbongeni Ngema. He was the finest producer, composer and lyricist of our time, period. We have lost a true legend, a doyen and genuine ambassador of theatre. On behalf of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government and our people we send our deepest condolences to his family for this great loss” said Premier Dube-Ncube
Mbongeni Ngerma will be remembered for trailblazing productions like the musical and epic movie Sarafina, Woza Albert, chats breaking Stimela SaseZola and innumerable other productions.
“Madlokovu did not only creatively conscientize South Africans about the political landscape in our country during apartheid but exported the story of the struggle of the oppressed people of South Africans to the world. His contribution carved an indelible mark in our journey towards freedom. As we mourn his passing and send our condolences to his family, friends and the industry at large, we also express our gratitude for having had him as our own. He had an eye for raw talent and contributed immensely in developing and nurturing township and rural talent” concluded the Premier.
