Parliament welcomes opening of Medupi Power Station’s Unit 6

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, Ms Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba, has welcomed the opening of the Medupi Power Station’s Unit Six in Lephalale in Limpopo on Sunday.

Ms Letsatsi-Duba said this is an important chapter for the country and for Eskom. “The addition of Unit 6 to the national grid will address energy challenges that the country is faced and stimulate economic growth. Medupi will see the success of key areas, job creation, infrastructure development, skills and entrepreneurship development in addition to using local business for procurement,” said Ms Letsatsi-Duba.

Medupi’s first unit started contributing power during its synchronisation period at the beginning of the year. The plant is expected to be fully operational by the first half of 2019. Medupi has six power generating units with a growth forecast of 4,800 megawatts capacity on the national grid. “The construction of Unit 6 is adding the crucial 800 megawatts to the national grid,” said Ms Letsatsi-Duba.
