Parliament saddened by the death of a patient refused admission in two hospitals

The Portfolio Committee on Health is saddened and shocked by the death of a 19 year old man who died after being turned away from two state hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

The man died after being refused admission in two state hospitals. The deceased was hit by a vehicle. The Chairperson of the Committee on Health, Ms Lindelwa Dunjwa, said: “A life was lost after a man was turned away in two government hospitals, a place where help is offered for people who face life and death situations”.

The alleged recklessness, irresponsibility, behavior and insensitivity by the healthcare workers of Osindisweni and Mahatma Gandhi hospitals is being investigated by the MEC of Health in KwaZulu-Natal. The Committee welcomes the swift response by the office of MEC Ms Dunjwa said: “We commend the probe and welcome the speedy response by the department and the office of the MEC A situation of this nature should not happen again as it is an unfortunate one”.

The Committee wishes to extend its condolences and sympathy to the family following the tragic loss of their son.
