The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs has noted the announcement by the Presidency of the resignation of Ms Raenette Taljaard as Commissioner of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa.
The Committee extends its gratitude to Ms Taljaard for the immense contribution she made during her tenure at the IEC, which ensured that the institution continued to deliver credible elections. The Committee is of the view that her input contributed to ensuring that the IEC remains an exemplary institution, in Africa and worldwide, on how to run free and fair elections.
With the preparations of the upcoming 2016 local government elections already underway, the Committee is hopeful that the President will urgently begin the process for appointing a Commissioner to fill the vacancy left by Ms Taljaard.
The Committee extends its best wishes to Ms Taljaard for her future endeavours.
