Number of victims has increased to ten on N3 Estcourt accident

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu has shown his heartfelt condolences to the families of ten victims killed in a horrific accident involving a luxury bus and a truck that happened in the early hours of Monday, 22 August 2011 on the N3 Ultra City-Estcourt.

According to preliminary reports received, the bus (Greyhound Coach Line) was travelling from Mthatha to Gauteng, when a truck travelling on the South bound lost control and collided with a bus. It is alleged that nine people died on the scene, seven were critically injured, 25 sustain serious injuries and 23 sustained minor injuries and were taken to Estcourt and Ladysmith Hospital. It has been reported that a driver of a truck that was admitted at Greys hospital in Pietermaritzburg has also died, increasing the number to ten victims.

A memorial service of ten victims will be conducted in commemorating their lives and a prayer to all those who have died on our roads. The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Mchunu together with different road safety stakeholders including interfaith, the municipality and the members of the families will first go to the accident scene to put flowers to honour the deceased.
