KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu is impressed by the KwaDukuza court decision to hand down a harsh sentence against a taxi driver accused of reckless driving.
Reports revealed that in May 2012, on the N2 North bound a taxi rear-ended another vehicle. Upon realising the collision, the taxi driver fled the scene. The vehicle then gave chase to the taxi and alerted the traffic authorities of what was happening. The Police were able to intercept the taxi at the Umvoti Toll plaza. A case of racketeering and reckless driving was opened against a taxi driver.
On Monday, 11 February 2013 the KwaDukuza Magistrate found Lungisani Mxolisi Miyakho guilty of the charges. The Court fined him R12 000 or nine months imprisonment.
Mchunu applauded the courts for taking road related accidents with the seriousness they deserve.
“I am very delighted at the court’s decision to give him such a harsh sentence. This shows that the courts are on board with the Department of Transport’s approach of ensuring that traffic violations are given priority. This is an example to all motorists that such behaviour will not be tolerated. I would also like to thank the police who played an active role in bringing these perpetrators to book. This is a culture we are now embracing of pro-activeness in dealing with transgressors on the road,” said Mchunu.
