North West Province; Matlosoana City: It was joy and at the same time cry of happiness when one of the renal unit patient in Klerksdorp Hospital was immediately called to receive a kidney donation at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg hospital.

A 31-year Bonakele John Kalipa who has been on haemodialysis for a duration of four hours, three times a week in klerksdorp hospital was fully worked up for renal transplantation by the team led by Nephrologist Dr. Wanis Shali.

“Despite the challenges of staff shortage, we created the third shift which starts after 4pm to accommodate him and other patients who are working full time since the 6th of September 2012. This means he waited for about 8 years for a kidney transplant” said Dr. Shali.

A life saving call from the transplant unit in Charlotte Maxeke; Johannesburg hospital was received in the morning the 24 January 2020 for a kidney transplantation.

Mr. Kalipa who was at work when the call came, was transported from Klerksdorp hospital to Charlotte Maxeke hospital by Dr. Nasreen Daniels, one of the junior doctors in the Renal Unit in her car to avoid any delays and delivered the patient in less than 2 hours. Her act of kindness has changed the life of this young man forever.
