Learners and teachers from a rural school in Nongoma northern KwaZulu-Natal ululated and burst into songs when the Deputy Minister of Communications, Stella Ndabeni and the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha arrived at Fumana High School.
Situated in the rolling hills of Zululand, the school lacks basic facilities such as library, computer laboratory and sport equipment. After learning about the plight of the school, Ndabeni and Sibhidla-Saphetha responded swiftly and approached Huawei a multinational networking and Telecommunication Company which donated 30 tablets at the school. The two ministers also handed over school uniform to 100 needy learners, sport equipment and a mobile library unit with over 200 books.
Addressing the learners, Sibhidla-Saphetha said that the mobile library unit will help improve the matric pass rate at the school. “Since physical education has become part of the school curriculum, we have also donated sport equipment to the school so that learners can be able to participate in sport activities,” said Sibhidla-Saphetha.
Ndabeni urged the learners to use the tablets to do their school work. “You must not use these tablets for facebook and taking pictures but for researching school projects. I implore you to look after this equipment so that even those who come after you will find it in tact,” said Ndabeni. She also announced that plans are afoot to bring post office services closer to the community.
