National Youth Development Agency on Minister of Justice intervention towards pardon for #Feesmustfall student activist

Statement of the Executive Chairperson of the National Youth Development Agency, Mr Sifiso Mtsweni on the Ministry Justice Intervention towards pardon for #Feesmustfall student activist

The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) welcomes the decision by the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Mr Michael Masutha on the demand for a Presidential pardon for all #FeesMustFall Student Activists.

In support of all the progressive calls for the President to grant amnesty, the NYDA stressed the important role of the “Ministry of Higher Education and Training and the Justice and Correctional Services in ensuring that all student activists are granted pardon”. It is in context that we welcome the decision starting the process towards amnesty for all student activists.

We also appreciate the process as outlined. However, we want to reiterate our call for more responsible behaviour during protest action at institutions of higher education and training. The use of violence and live ammunition during protest must be discouraged. It is our belief that solutions for challenges within the sector depend on dialogue between affected stakeholders.
