National House of Traditional Leaders elects new Deputy Chairperson

Ikosi Sipho Etwell Mahlangu, the leader of the delegation from Mpumalanga Provincial House of Traditional Leaders has been elected Deputy Chairperson of the National House of Traditional Leaders at a special seating that took place today.

The election is per Section 9 (11) of the National House of Traditional Leaders Act 22 of 2009 which states that “If the office of the Deputy Chairperson becomes vacant, the Chairperson must preside over the election of a member to fill the vacancy”. Ikosi Mahlangu is filling the space that was left vacant after the passing on of the late Kgoshi Frans Makgeru in 2014. Ikosi Mahlangu hails from the Ndzundza Mabusa Traditional Council.

He was elected an executive member of the National House in 2012 and led the representation from the Mpumalanga Provincial House. In his inaugural speech, Ikosi Mahlangu thanked all executive members for their support that they entrusted in him. Of the 21 executive members, Mahlangu got 13 votes against 9 of Inkosi Themba Mavundla who represents the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial House.

The elections were presided by the Deputy Judge President of the Gauteng High Court Aubrey Ledwaba.
