DWS media statement on suspect arrested on cable theft
Minister of the Department of Water and Sanitation, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane welcomes the arrest of suspects in relation to the theft of cable, which theft of cables led to the recent water challenges in the three Gauteng Metros and Mogale City District Municipality.
The theft of cables, according to Minister Mokonyane, needs even to be elevated to an act of criminality as its impact continues to be a negative to the socio-economic development of the country.
The work of the police in this regard has proven the capacity of our police with regard to how seriously they take their work, as well as how efficiently they work. This work is really commended by not just the Minister and the Department of Water and Sanitation, but the water and sanitation sector as a whole.
Whilst this work of the police services is commendable, it is critical for the community to be active participants of this effort to challenge all acts of criminality in relation to this activity. As a people we must take pride in the infrastructure that this country needs and is in place. The country must appreciate that only as a collective can we continue to make progress as we endeavour to better the lives of all South Africans, whilst together moving forward the sustainable security of water supply and the most dignified sanitation services.
