Minister Edna Molewa holds bilateral meeting with Danish Minister of Development Cooperation

The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Dr Edna Molewa has concluded bilateral discussions with the Danish Minister of Development Cooperation Ms Ulla Tørnæs, in Pretoria this evening, Thursday 1 March 2018.

The Ministers’ discussions focused on various environmental issues, paving a way for a Memorandum of Agreement (MoU) that would cover matters such as biodiversity and conservation; transition to green economy; chemicals and waste management; climate change mitigation and circular economy between South African and Denmark.

During the meeting, Minister Molewa expressed gratitude to Minister Tørnæs, saying the two country’s cooperation on environmental issues will augment an already existing cooperation on renewable energy and efficiency implemented through the Danish-South African Energy Partnership Program.

“The South African government is open for engagements and cooperation that will propel our course for a transition to an environmentally sustainable, climate resilient, low carbon development pathway and a just society as envisioned in our National Development,” said Minister Molewa.

The meeting also discussed South Africa’s possible participation Partnership for Green Growth (P4G) and the Global Goals 2030. “P4G is a strategic forum that aims to accelerate sustainable green growth and address Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 11, 12 and 17. I have no doubt that South Africa would certainly benefit from such progressive initiative,” said Minister Molewa.

It is anticipated that a MoU between the South African Department of Environmental Affairs and the Danish Ministry of Environment and Food will be concluded during the course of 2018.
