Another project totalling 150 mw reaches legal close under the Risk Mitigation IPP Procurement Programme

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy is pleased to announce that another Preferred Bidder under the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP) has reached Legal Close on 14 December 2023.

The ACWA Power Project DAO, with contracted capacity of 150 MW, is the seventh hybrid renewable Project to reach Legal Close under the RMIPPPP and consists of a hybrid Solar PV and Battery Storage technologies. The Project will be developed by ACWA Power Project DAO (RF) (PTY) LTD and is expected to reach commercial operation in early 2026.

In addition to the Legal Close of ACWA Power Project DOA, the Department is also pleased to announce that both Oya Energy Hybrid Facility and Mulilo Total Hydra Storage (combined 203 MW) have reached Commercial Close on 14 December 2023 and these Projects will enter into construction phase.

This brings the total number of projects that have signed agreements under the RMIPPPP to seven (7) out of the eleven (11) appointed Preferred Bidders and will together add a total of 578 MW of dispatchable capacity to the national grid. The total investment attracted from all the projects that have signed agreements to date under the RMIPPPP is R42.8 billion.

A total of 17 projects (totaling 1587 MW) procured under the RMIPPPP and REIPPPP BW 5 have achieved Commercial Close and are now in construction phase (150 MW of which has already reached Commercial Operation).
