Media statement on the final report by the auditors

Following allegations of corruption made in the main by the labour union South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) against some members of the management of the Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal, The MEC for Education Mr ES Mchunu announced on 21 August 2009 that the department would institute an investigation into the allegations.

The auditors, Ngubane and Company Consortium comprising of the following three auditing firms namely; Ngubane and Company, Thabani Zulu and Company as well as Mzimela and Company were subsequently appointed and they conducted their investigation and submitted their preliminary report in October 2009.

On the basis of their preliminary findings, the auditors were then asked to conduct a full forensic investigation, which they have now concluded.

On 9 April 2010 the auditors presented a final report and made a presentation to the MEC on their findings. They have, whoever, pointed out that there is a portion of their report that they still need to finalise and requested to present it to the MEC in a week's time.

The MEC is currently studying the report and will share it with the relevant stakeholders in due course.
