Media statement

The MEC for Education in KwaZulu Natal, Senzo Mchunu has expressed reservations about the lack of facts in asweeping statement made in an article that appears on Monday’s edition of Ilanga Newspaper. The statement relates to the resignation of Umlazi District Director, Mr Mlungisi Ntombela which claims that the department is currently frought with administrative problems.

“We are not aware of these problems especially those purported to have a causal effect on the resignation of Mr Ntombela. The journalist further claims that the individual in question was cleared of any wrongdoing by the forensic investigation that was instituted earlier this year. Furthermore, the journalist does not substantiate his assertion, for instance, that he has read the report and that it does indeed clear Mr Ntombela,” MEC Senzo Mchunu said.

The report goes on to mention the earlier resignations of two other senior officials of the department. The MEC says these resignations do not come anywhere close to reflecting problems in the department. He further states that the department is not in a position to bar anyone who wishes to further their careers elsewhere.

MEC Senzo Mchunu calls on journalists to go beyond hearsays in their reporting.
