KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu welcomes the sentencing of a 39 year old grandfather
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has welcomed the sentencing of a 39-year old grandfather to 20 years of imprisonment for the rape of an 11-year old girl. The accused was convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.
He was sentenced on Wednesday, 1 October 2014, after the magistrate heard how he raped the victim at Enseleni area, eMpangeni. During 2008 the victim was at Enseleni area when she was approached by her grandfather who called her to the kitchen. She was raped and later she informed her grandmother.
A case of rape was opened at Empangeni police station for further investigation. Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation that led to the arrest of the accused. He was charged with rape and appeared in court several times until he was convicted.
Mchunu today, (Monday, 6 October 2014) welcomed this arrest, commending the police for the work well done.
“People, who commit crime and those who do what is against the law, must face consequences of their deeds. I welcome the sentence and I am sure that others who think of doing the same will think twice. Our police are hard at work. We do not have a place for criminals in our society. I want to also to thank the police for the work well done in apprehending this man and ensuring that he faces the full might of the law,” said Mchunu.
