KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has welcomed the probe into a shooting incident allegedly involving eThekwini Metro policeman and a taxi boss in Prince Edward Street, Durban, saying it was important to get into the bottom of this matter. It is alleged that at the weekend eThekwini Metro police officer shot and killed taxi rank manager four times in the full view of passengers.
Police have announced that Durban Central police station has since launched an investigation into this matter which has also been reported to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for further investigation.“ We welcome steps that are being taken to investigate and get into the bottom of this allegation. These allegations are, indeed, disturbing and reflect badly on the police work. We need to find out what exactly happened so that we could take all necessary corrective measures,” said Mchunu.
He urged all affected people to cooperate with this investigation and provide all necessary information so that the full picture of what happened could emerge. He then sent his condolences to the family of the bereaved.
