KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has welcomed a move by KwaZulu-Natal maskandi artists to highlight, educate and mobilise communities against the killing and maiming of police officers. The campaign was launched in Durban at the weekend by popular maskandi artists such as Mjikijelwa Ngubane and Mtshengiseni Gcwensa.
The campaign is set to rolled-out across the province and it is part of drumming up support for police officers and beaming the message that police killings must end. Basically, the maskandi artists will be using their music to galvanize communities to support the police and promote messages of peace and tolerance.
Today, Monday, 6 January 2015 Mchunu welcomed this campaign, commending the maskandi artists for this crucial campaign.
“I welcome this campaign because it will go a very long way in the fight against crime and the scourge of police killings in KwaZulu-Natal. The police toil day and night, in sometimes very dangerous situations, to ensure that we are safe and live in crime free environment.
“Therefore, the police deserve necessary support and protection from us. The reality is that crime is our collective responsibility and we can never overcome crime without communities.
I urge the communities to support this campaign and our police officers,” said Mchunu.
Mchunu said this campaign was in line with the One Million Voices Against Crime and Police Killings campaign, which was initiated and then launched in November last year by the Department of Community Safety and Liaison, to mobilise one million voices against crime and police killings.
