KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, welcomes the arrests of four suspects in connection with robberies of foreign owned shops
Kwazulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has welcomed the arrests of four suspects in connection with armed robberies of foreign owned shops in Umlazi, south of Durban. In the early hours of this morning, 4 February 2015, police responded to a business robbery in f-section, Umlazi, where two armed suspects had attacked and robbed two Ethiopian nationals at their tuck-shop.
When police arrived, the suspects allegedly shot at the police and police shot back – killing one the suspects. The second suspect, 19, was arrested and charged. Police then received information on suspects that were wanted in connection with a robbery of Somali national at his tuck-shop in f-section, Umlazi, on 2 February 2015. Police managed to arrest and charge the three suspects.
Today (4 February 2015), Mchunu welcomed these arrests, saying they would send a strong to message to perpetrators who attack and rob foreign owned shops that police would catch them.
“Again and again, we have condemned the attacks on foreign owned shops. We even led negations for amicable resolutions to end these attacks.
“I applaud the gallant efforts by the team of police officers who worked around the clock to execute these crucial arrests. The relentless toils displayed by these police officers serve as clear demonstrations of their commitment to work flat out to bring these criminals to book.
“We would like to encourage the communities to continue working closely with the police to isolate and flush out these criminals from society,” said Mchunu.
