KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu applauds arrests made in connection with the weekend murder of police officers in Kwa-Dukuza
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu, has hugely welcomed the breakthrough made by the Hawks in the murder of two police officers in KwaDukuza at weekend.
A team of detectives from the Hawks have arrested a-53-year-old- police officer in connection with the murder of two policemen in KwaDukuza last Saturday.
The two murdered police officer were part of a four member team from KwaDukuza SAPS who stopped to check a suspicious vehicle. But while they were still readying themselves for this investigation three unknown men emerged from the bush and immediately opened fire on the vehicle.
The constable and student constable, seated in the front of the vehicle, were immediately killed as the men opened fire on them shooting them in the head. At the time MEC Mchunu condemned this attack of police officers, describing it as "callous, heartless and barbaric" deed.
Today MEC Mchunu welcomed the arrest of a suspect in connection with this murder, saying it (arrest) would send a clear message to those behind the murder of police officers that the long arm of law would always catch up with them.
“We have underlined the value the Government and the community place on the service provided by the police officers. Any attack on them is the attack on the Government and the community.
“We, therefore, welcome the arrest of the suspect in connection with this murder and urge investigators to carefully and diligently work on this matter so that those responsible should be sent to jail,” said MEC Mchunu.
The suspect is expected to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court on Wednesday facing two charges of murder. MEC Mchunu said his Department would be keenly keeping an eye on the proceedings of this case.
