MEC Willies Mchunu on drug bust at Durban harbour

MEC Mchunu applauds the apprehending of 95 kilograms of cocaine

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has applauded the seizure by police of 95 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated street value of R29 million, at the Durban Harbour.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation and the Hawks intercepted the container that was carrying the cocaine on Tuesday night, 30 September 2014. The ship carrying the container departed Buenos Aires in Argentina (South America) on 5 September 2014 and arrived at the Durban Harbour on the night of 30 September 2014.

The intelligence-led operation was conducted in conjunction with the SAPS, DPCI, Hawks and Customs Unit officials at the Durban Harbour. No arrest has been made at this stage.

Mchunu today (October 6, 2014) praised and welcomed the bust made in this joint operation, saying that this proves beyond any reasonable doubt that, working together we can fight crime effectively.

“I would like to thank the SAPS, DPCI, Hawks and the Customs unit officials involved in this joint operation. This, indeed, shows that working together through partnerships, we can achieve more in terms of fighting crime in the province of KwaZulu Natal.

This will also send a strong message to drug syndicates all over the world that KwaZulu-Natal is a no-go area,” said Mchunu Mchunu added that drugs were one of the key drivers of crime and criminality in the province, urging members of the community to work together with the police to ensure that drug pushers were put behind the bars.
