Kwazulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, shocked that a police officer allegedly shot his pregnant girlfriend and turned the gun to himself
Kwazulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has learnt with shock that a police officer shot and critically injured his pregnant girlfriend before turning the gun to himself this week in kwaDabeka, Clermont.
The exact details of the incident are still scant and remain a subject of police investigation. However, reports suggest that Constable Lizwe Mkhize (32), who was stationed at kwaDabeka Police Station allegedly used his service weapon to shoot his 22 year old girlfriend, who was seven months pregnant, before turning the gun to himself at his residence in kwaDabeka on Wednesday, 19 February 2015.
Mkhize died at the scene but his girlfriend and her baby survived and they are still in hospital. The motive for the incident has not yet been established but police are investigating the matter. Today, 20 February 2015 MEC Mchunu condemned the incident, saying that he was extremely taken aback.
He called on police management to probe the matter and urged anyone with information to submit it to the police urgently. Mchunu said police officers were often murdered and maimed by criminals and it was unfortunate and painful when they harmed and killed themselves, their family, friends or lovers.
“We are shocked and disturbed by this incident because police officers are tasked with protecting communities. We need to get into the bottom of this incident so that we can totally understand what really happened and find methods that can stop these incidences from happening again,” said Mchunu.
